The Difference between Korea and Japan
Before reading this story, I knew little to nothing about how Koreans were treated in Korea versus in Japan. However, through Sunja's story it is easy to see the stark contrast between them. In Busan, although Sunja is considered to be in the lower class, she lives in well-built and respectable house. She works hard and reaps the benefit of her mother's business. She earns the respect of the other boarders and is even treated with kindness.
However, when she moves to Osaka in Japan to live with Isak, Yoseb, and Kyunghee, she is treated extremely poorly and discriminated against. Even the Korean community she had there seemed to be competing with one another, causing mistrust even between other Korean Japanese people. The house she lives in self-constructed and much smaller than her house in Busan. She is appalled by the small and overall living conditions, especially considering that the home she was living in was considered high-end for the area.
I am unsure of what will happen in the future, but I want to know whether conditions will get better for Sunja and her family, or if they will continue to live impoverished. I hope the first option holds to be true.
