Digital Humanities Tool
The digital humanities component of this course has definitely impacted my learning. I had never taken a class in which I had to work with one of these tools or produce something other than an essay, slideshow, or final test. It was really interesting to have the opportunity to work with these, as I felt as if they allowed me to be really creative and display information in a more engaging way.
With Neatline, it was great getting a chance to create something that incorporated both a timeline and map style. I feel as if this tool will be able to help me in the future and will come in handy. Although at first it was difficult to navigate, Colin helped a lot in answering questions and slowly explaining how to use it. I wish there was a similar platform that was a little more modern because I felt like Neatline is still missing a few things that I thought would be really helpful.
StoryMap was a great platform and I really enjoyed using it for my group project. It was sort of like a more updated version of Neatline. I think if Neatline and StoryMap were to combine, it would form the perfect digital humanities tool because they both have great aspects.
I also used VoiceThread for many of my research excursion to make narrated slideshows and thought this was a great tool that made the process super simple and easy. The parts that took the most time were the research, figuring out exactly what I was going to say, and then crafting the slideshow, but the VoiceThread part itself went quickly and smoothly. I will definitely be using this platform in the future!
Hi Eloise! I'm glad that you got more comfortable using these tools. I have yet to use VoiceThread, but I agree with lots of your points regarding StoryMaps and Neatline. I also found Neatline difficult to use at the beginning, but it ended up being a platform that I really enjoyed using as I got more comfortable with it. I'm excited to see how you will apply this knowledge and skillset in the future!
ReplyDeleteHi Eloise! I totally feel you. At first, the tools were extremely difficult for me to use. However, after some getting used to, I think I got the hang of it and created decent presentations. For example, at first, Neatline was tiresome to use, until I realized there were features that could make it easier to use. Of course, there are limitations to everything, but I still find the tools great for presentations!
